Caring for Trauma Survivors in Birth: A Training for Birth Professionals

Get a certificate by completing the program.

We Know Birth Matters Every day, birth professionals interact with patients carrying the invisible weight of past trauma. Their experiences can shape how they engage with care, how their bodies respond in labor, and how they heal postpartum. I’ll be direct: understanding trauma is crucial, but it’s not enough. We must also learn how to create an environment where clients can access their innate resilience, strengths, and healing. That’s what this course is about. Description In this webinar, we will cover: ✅ The neuroscience of trauma and its effects on birth ✅ How trauma responses can show up during labor and postpartum recovery ✅ Trauma-informed strategies to foster trust, safety, and empowerment ✅ How to assess and refer patients for additional trauma care ✅ The impact of partner trauma and how to support them ✅ How vicarious trauma affects birth professionals—and ways to prevent burnout This is more than just a lecture—it’s a hands-on, practical training designed to transform the way you support birthing individuals. Goal By the end of this class, you will have a clear understanding of how trauma affects birth and gain concrete skills to improve patient outcomes while reducing retraumatization. Objectives 1. Explain the neurobiological effects of trauma on the birthing process and recognize how past trauma can influence a patient’s physical and emotional responses during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. 2. Identify key trauma responses in the birth room and differentiate between patient behaviors stemming from trauma versus standard labor-related distress. 3. Implement trauma-informed care techniques during prenatal visits, labor, and postpartum care to support survivors of trauma and create a safer, more empowering birth experience. 4. Recognize the signs of vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue in birth professionals and apply self-care strategies to maintain resilience while providing patient-centered care. This course is worth 2 CE Hours
